Frequently Asked Questions

Often people getting a tattoo for the first time or the first time at our studio have a few questions, we have covered the most common ones here but if you can’t find the answer to your question then please send us an e-mail or give us a call & we can do our best to answer it.

How old do I have to be to get a tattoo?

The law says you have to be 18. NO EXCEPTIONS, including parental or guardian consent. You will also need to provide valid photo ID before you get your tattoo.

Does it hurt?

It varies from person to person. Some find the process quite uncomfortable and others actually like it. The most common response from first-timers is, “Is that all” and they almost seem disappointed!

Either way, our artists will look after you and make your experience as enjoyable as possible.

What happens when I get a tattoo?

Firstly, you must complete and sign a consent form and provide photo ID.

Your artist will then prepare the area of skin that is to be tattooed. This includes cleaning with an antiseptic solution and shaving to ensure the skin is smooth and clean.

A temporary stencil of your tattoo will then be applied to your skin. You can then check to make sure the position and size of the tattoo is just right before the tattoo process begins. Your artist will then begin applying the ink.

When your tattoo is finished, it will be dressed and covered with a clear plastic wrap to protect it from infection while initial healing begins.

Your artist will explain how to care for your new tattoo, and you will be given an after-care pack containing clear instructions, a business card and a Chupa Chup!

How do I take care of my tattoo?

Please follow these aftercare instructions to assist your tattoo in the healing process and maximise the quality of your tattoo.

Keep in mind every individual heals differently and you must follow the instructions your tattoo artist gives you very carefully for the best possible outcome.

Before you begin, ALWAYS thoroughly wash your hands before touching your tattoo.

Leave your dressing on for 1-2 hours before removing to seal the ink and reduce weeping blood and plasma. Remove dressing and gently wash your tattoo with mild soap and water. Rinse briefly with cold water initially to close pores and seal in the ink. Softly pat dry (do not rub) with a clean towel or paper towel.

Re-apply a thin layer of cream to your tattoo. We recommend Dr. Pickles and Moringa Life Plus as it protects your tattoo from infection and aids the skin’s healing process.

Continue to apply cream 2 times a day until your tattoo is fully healed. You will know it’s healed when the skin is no longer peeling and the surface of your tattoo resembles the rest of your skin and doesn’t have a shiny appearance.

DO NOT scratch, pick or vigorously rub the surface of your new tattoo, even if it gets itchy. Doing so can damage the quality of your tattoo and cause it to appear patchy.

DO NOT swim in the sea, pool or a spa until your new tattoo is completely healed (approximately 3-4 weeks). Sea Salt and Chlorine both act as bleach and may discolour or fade your tattoo. Pools and spas also contain varying levels of bacteria and may cause your tattoo to become infected.

NOTE: FOOT TATTOOS – do not wear covered shoes for at least 7 days following your tattoo.

For long-term care, always use sunscreen when outdoors to prevent your tattoo from fading. Moisturise your healed tattoo as required.

How much does it cost?

We can give you an estimated price for many tattoos, but for complex or larger designs we quote an hourly rate.

Emailing the studio with your design, including all relevant details such as:

Size, location, colour or grey wash etc., and we can give you an estimate.

Estimates given via email will need to be confirmed in person when you come into the studio.

Depending on the tattoo that you are wanting will depend on whether the artists are able to give an estimate or will need to arrange a free consultation to discuss your ideas. Our artists can then give you an estimate of the cost and time involved in creating your tattoo and ensure you get exactly what you want.

Note: Quotes cannot be given over the phone.

Do I need my own artwork or can you draw up a design for me?

Sacred Skin specializes in custom tattoos so you will need to book a consult with the artist best suited to your design and come in for a chat with some reference pictures it generally only takes 5-10 minutes and doesn’t cost anything.

Bring in an existing image, a rough sketch or even an idea, and we will take it from there.

There is a small fee for custom artwork, but it’s a small price to pay for having a unique tattoo.

If you are looking for inspiration for a new tattoo, Google Images and Pinterest are great places to start.

Other places to look for artwork are magazines and books. You can even draw a rough sketch. Don’t be embarrassed about your hand drawn artwork. We can see what you have in mind even from a very basic sketch.

It’s important to remember that you don’t have to find the perfect design. Because we can do custom artwork, you just need to find a design that is close to what you want.

How sterile is Sacred Skin?

We take health and safety seriously in our studios to ensure that you have a clean, sterile and safe tattoo experience.
